“How can we help people who can no longer move their hands?”
Dominik Hepp and Tobias Knobloch from HKK Bionics, a medical technology spin-off of Ulm University of Applied Sciences, set out to answer this question. Together, they developed the “exomotion hand one” orthosis for people with paralyzed hands. Sensors and intelligent software detect the wearer’s intended movement and use miniaturized actuators to assist the hand’s movement. In Berlin, they were recently honored at the VDE Tec Summit as one of two innovative winning teams of the 2018 e-diale-Zukunft Challenge. The expert jury evaluated the ideas based on criteria such as sustainability, innovation, expertise, feasibility, and plausibility. The two winning teams are now looking forward to a week-long trip to the world’s leading VDE Tec hotspots in Shanghai or Silicon Valley.
